"Course for Kindness" Walk-a-Thon

10/22/2019

Dear Wakefield School Families,

It's the event that the kids have been waiting for, and we are happy to give you all the details about it.  With the help of WEHSA, the school is organizing the 3rd Wakefield Elementary School Walk-a-thon.  The theme is the "Course for Kindness" Walk-a-Thon, where the monies raised will go toward funding the Roots of Empathy program at the school.  Last week, we were happy to inform you that the Program will be soon starting at our school.  We also hope you read the story about it in this week's Low Down.

You will find below details of the walk-a-thon and how you can be involved.  Your child will be bringing home the Walk-a-Thon Letter and the Course for Kindness Pledge Form.

What?  "Course for Kindness" Walk-a-Thon - where kids run, walk, skip, hop or do any fun stride to get around a course.

Who?  K5 to Grade 6

When?  Morning of October 10 - K5 to Grade 2 from 9:00 to 10:00; Grade 3 to Grade 6 from 10:00 to 11:00 (approximately as kids are being bussed from the school)

Where?  Soccer field at the Wakefield Community Centre

How are funds raised?  Kids will be bringing home pledge forms where family and friends can pledge either by lap or make a flat donation.  Please DO NOT send money before the event.  Pledge forms and donations should be returned after the event from October 11 to 18.  Your child will receive a note with the number of laps they completed in order to complete their pledge form.

What should my child bring?  Children are asked to bring A WATER BOTTLE to keep waste to a minimum.  Also, children should be dressed according to the weather with proper footwear.  We will run rain or shine.  Mornings are getting chillier, so it's a good idea for kids to have a sweater or fleece with them.

How can you get involved?  We welcome parents, family and friends to join us at the Community Centre to CHEER everyone on. You can also VOLUNTEER and DONATE fruit.  We need about 10 volunteers to help us with the event.  Below is a list of things we need help with.  Please contact wehsa2017@gmail.com if you can volunteer and the activity you are interested in helping with.
  • Set up/Take down of Course - Starting at 8:00 am at the Community Centre.  We will set up 5 tents, tables and chairs. The event should be done by noon.
  • Cutting fruit - oranges and bananas. Bring a knife and cutting board.  We need about 4 people.
  • Handing out/cleaning up fruit and water
  • Taking pictures - About 2 people who would then share pictures with Julie at jframgreig@wqsb.qc.ca using Dropbox if possible.
  • Fruit DONATION - we are asking for donations of bananas and oranges.  Please drop off in the marked boxes by the school office starting next Monday, October 7 to Wednesday, October 9.  You can also bring it to the Community Centre on the morning of the event.
We reassure you that the walk-a-thon is done in the spirit of fun and for all abilities.  Our aim is to empower all students and to make them feel that they are contributing toward a good cause for their school and the broader community.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the school or WEHSA.

We thank you for your support, and look forward to what will be a fun and memorable day!
